AP ConnecticutIndiana Jones sequel to shoot scenes in New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) _ Some star power is coming to downtown New Haven, where scenes are scheduled to be filmed next month for a sequel to the popular "Indiana Jones" movie series.

A spokesman for director Steven Spielberg confirmed Monday that the fourth installment of the action series will include a car chase set to be filmed on Chapel Street between College and High streets.

A preproduction crew visited the city last week and Monday to check locations and talk with merchants, one of whom said they were told that filming would occur June 28 and 30, the New Haven Register reported Tuesday.

"I really have no details on it at all, except to say that there will be some filming there," Marvin Levy, a spokesman for Spielberg, told the newspaper.

The movie starring Harrison Ford and Sean Connery is set to open May 22, 2008. It will be the fourth in the series, which began with the 1981 film "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

That movie was followed by two sequels: "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" in 1984 and "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" in 1989.

The new installment is tentatively titled "Indiana Jones IV" and, in addition to Ford and Connery, is slated to feature actors Cate Blanchett and Shia LeBeouf.

Several New Haven merchants said their storefronts will be transformed to capture the 1950s-era look of the film, which centers on the adventures of fictional archaeologist and professor Indiana Jones.

The last Hollywood visit to the Elm City was in September, when Uma Thurman filmed a scene for the thriller "In Bloom," planned for release later this year. That also was shot on Chapel Street.

The Board of Aldermen must approve the street closings and other details before filming can occur.

Alderman Nicholas Shalek, who represents the city's downtown area, said he had not heard the names Spielberg, Lucas and Ford in connection with the project, but that city officials were told the movie would be "big."

"Generally, I think its a terrific thing for the city," he said. (anyone want to take a ride to Connecticut? .. well, it was a thought!)

In a press release Monday, Lucas, Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford confirmed that the long-gestating fourth installment in the Indiana Jones saga would begin production in June. Lucas will produce via Lucasfilm, Spielberg will direct and Ford will dust off the fedora for one more go-round as the globe-hopping, adventure-seeking archaeologist.

"George, Harrison and I are all very excited," Spielberg said. Lucas chimed in by saying, "These films are such great fun to make. I'm looking forward to reuniting with the team and starting this new journey."

And Ford, who will be 64 when cameras roll, added, "I'm delighted to be back in business with my old friends.

"I don't know if the pants still fit but I know the hat will."

There was no immediate word on the official title or plot points. Also unanswered is whether Sean Connery will return as Indy's father. Lucas has previously said that he wanted the semi-retired actor back and would be writing him into the story line.

Paramount Pictures, which released the previous installments, will distribute the fourth, which is reportedly targeting a May 2008 release.

At the moment, in Bowen, north Queensland a film directed by Baz Luhrman ("Strictly Ballroom" and "Moulin Rouge") starring Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman is being filmed. The movie will be called "Australia"...I think...the locals are beside themselves with excitement! ;)

i'm going to try not to get too excited since it's so far away. Not to mention your boy Harrison is getting up there, how's he gonna crack that whip and kick butt at his age?
