The Never Ending Series...
My friend Cath, over at Read_Warbler made some lists concerning book series that she is reading, or would like to read. As I responded to her post I realized that I needed to do the same thing. If for no other reason than to prove to myself that I was under control when it came to series of books.
Obviously I am NOT under control!...

I have always preferred series of books when I love the characters and there's a good story to go with them. Lately I find that I have begun to wonder if there's such a thing as a stand alone book anymore!!
I'm finding it harder to buy the number ONE book in a series when it's a new release. If at least 2 of a series is already released I find it easier. I think because if I read 2 books with the same characters and storyline then I won't easily forget it, but if only one is released, with a year to wait for book 2 and a year after that to wait for book 3.. well..I'm at the point in my life where I would need a memory pill of some sort!

I know what you mean about series... I have several I follow. I -do- try to force myself to wait till the book is out in paperback, that saves me a little... Unfortunately, every time I am caught up on all of the series I follow I find another one LOL!
I do enjoy finding series that already have several books out. I am currently economizing for the holidays by rereading the Harry Potter series. 7 books should keep me busy for the month of December ;p I am actually on book 3 because I started in November.
Well, you're not that much better than me. I really thought you would be you know. And here's some shocking news... there're some series on your list that I really think I should add to mine. Cos there aren't quite enough on *my* list.........
Astaryth: Oh how I wish I could read the mass market paperbacks! I'd save myself lots of money!! My eyes just won't do it.. print is too small and/ or double spacing sentences helps.. the only true reason for hardbacks is that they last much longer before turning brown!
Cath: nope, I didn't expect to be any better than you LOL.. utoh! you are blaming me for your list growning? LOL LOL..
THis cracks me up :p The one on your list that I REALLY want to read is the Black Jewels trilogy. THat one sounds phenomenal. And you can add 2 more books to the Old Kingdom trilogy now :p Nix just announced that there will be 2 new books coming out, lol.
I have SO many series books on my TBR shelf....and most of them are only the first volume! Sheesh
"Obviously I am NOT under control!..." I could not help but chuckle when I read that! :)
I've grown really reluctant to read series over the years. I certainly don't shy away from trilogies, but when a series goes beyond that I just get very gun shy about the whole thing. Once the Wheel of Time series is finally done I may be tempted to go back to that. A lot will depend on the overall feelings about how Brandon Sanderson finishes off Jordan's series. I know that I really need to read the Song of Fire and Ice series by George RR Martin as it is my friend Jeff's favorite and I feel bad not having read even one volume of it yet when he has tried so many books that I have recommended.
I know the Pern series looks interesting and the original trilogy forms its own story, if I'm not mistaken, so I should check that out. I LOVED reading the first 3 Foundation books earlier this year.
More than anything I get frustrated by how much I forget in the years between books come out and much prefer stand alone stories.
Chris: if more than one book in a series has been released I have to read all of them up to the point of waiting for the release of a "new one". I can't read one book, enjoy it, and know the next book is available but go on to read something totally different!
Carl: oh the George Martin series is daunting lol! Each and every book is huge!! they would take some serious time to read!
And yes, Dragonflight, Dragonquest and the White Dragon is a trilogy that couldn end right there. I have found that many readers that are quite a bit younger than myself, but are fantasy/ sci fi readers have not read McCaffrey's Pern books. It really HAS to do with the fact they are older books and of course so much new stuff has come out since they did.. but they are a series of books I will read and reread until I can no longer read. GREAT characters. GREAT stories. GREAT landbuilding of another planet. But like any story.. it's not for everyone.. though I find that hard to believe LOL..
Ohhh I am so with you on the forgetting part! Which is why I much prefer when at least 2 books are out on any series so I have time to "remember" the characters and whats going on.
