For No Reason ...

Have you even done something for no reason at all?  Or, "just because"?  Or, "it just seemed right at the time"?

I did that.

Not just once but twice this week. *gasp!*

The first thing I did, I have truly never done before.  I wrote to the President.  Yes.. Obama.  Don't ask me why.. I honestly don't know.  I just found myself sitting in front of the computer writing a letter.  When I was done, I didn't hesitate putting it into an envelope and addressing it to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington DC.

Do I expect a response?   Hell no!  So, why did I write?  Damn if I know!

While I sat shaking my head the next day over writing to the President of the United States (not that anyone can't do the same thing.. it's just not me!), I was reading blogs (nothing new there lol) when I read something about a publishing company.

Now, most know I have written a fantasy trilogy.  Ya'll also know I'm not a "writer", and where the story came from I will never know, but I did it.  I know it's not publish worthy.. not even close !  But for the hell of it, ONCE I did send out a query and never heard back.  Well.. I did it again.

Go ahead.. ask why when I know it's not publish worthy.  My response is the same as it was with the letter to the President.  I don't know, and I expect no response from either, but I did it anyway..... so tell me why?  I had no previous thoughts of doing either thing... and yet I did.

Just because I could?

It just seemed right at the time?

I have no reason at all !...

This is beginning to drive me crazy...Sooooo.. I need to ask you.. have you ever done something ,out of the ordinary, and not know why??  If so, tell me about it.. I want to try to understand what makes this sort of thing happen, and I KNOW I'm not alone!  So.. talk to me!  Either in comments or as a post.. I wanna know why!  I need to know before I do something  even stupider !

Sometimes the subconscious just takes over, I guess! And for the record, I don't think either of those things was stupid. You had something to say to the President, so you said it. On some level maybe you thought the time was right for your stories to come out. So you gave them another chance. There's absolutely no harm in being impulsive!

There are many things I wish I could just give up and do but I always overthink them and end up doing nothing. So I'll just say good job for taking Nike seriously when they said "Just Do It"! ;)

hi Asara: I understand overthinking things.. and I understand if something is on your mind to "just do it".. but honestly, neither of these things were on my mind longer than it took to write them! I guess subconsciously I wanted to wish the President good luck.. god knows he needs it and so do we all to get thru what's happening. I can't tell you how depressed and scared I get listening to the news anymore. the less jobs, the more depression for people, the more suicides, the more robberies to steal money to eat, the more many bad things are going to be, and yep it scares the ch it outta me.

I don't share your idea that these things were foolish. The letter to the Prez will probably never see him, but it'll get you a picture if nothing else. And what harm can the query hurt?

ps. you should add a 'follow me' gadget to your sidebar so I can sign up. I enjoy your blog but it doesn't appear on my 'dashboard' and I miss many posts.

hi Slapinions: but thats just it.. I honestly didn't have any thought of writing to the Prez or Publisher and bingo.. i did it. and I really don't know why.

sorry about the follow me gadget I have the original "template" on this blog (because it's the only one I know how to do things in) have the follow me thing and other things I would need to change over to "layout" and then I can't do the things I do in the template.. so until I "have to" I don't.. it also means I can't "follow" others either. but I visit blogs everyday. if no new post its a quickie lol..

I agree with all of the others here... neither of those things were stupid!!

Just a Thought: I was just reading over at Wil Wheaton's blog that he is using a service that prints out books on demand for his newest book. If someone wants it they order it. The place prints it out and sends it. He doesn't make as much per book as when he had them printed and handled the distribution hisself, but he doesn't have to mess with any of the overhead or other headaches either. Anyway... what about something like that? Then any of us who want to own your books could :)

Oh, and because I should mention it... Some of those "We publish your Book" guys are a scam. That's why I pointed you to Wil's blog. I'm sure he did his homework on who to use so you wouldn't have to. LOL!

It's nice to step out of your comfort zone once in a while. I would love to read your trilogy one of these days, so hopefully I get the chance! Chris liked it, afterall, so it can't be as unpublishable as you think!

hey JJ: well maybe "stupid" is the wrong word.. i truly don't understand why I did what I did. It never passed my mind to write to the president..never! so I just don't get it..and i can't believe no one else has not done something like this!!! cripes, I'm going mental! lol

kelly: umm.. Chris likes everything! (bless his heart!) but he did help me with yet "another edit" lol...

Oh DesLily, you're my hero!!! I'm soooo glad you did both of those things! Especially with your book! And if they happen to turn you down, send it to another. Don't stop to think about it, just do it!

debi: i seem to do many things that I have no rhyme or reason for! but I really am not trying to "sell my story".. besides if anyone did want it I'd have a stroke!

have you had anyone read it -- and give you input?
(Not the letter to the president, your trilogy hee hee)

Pam: oh sure, long ago..cousins who were so amazed that I could put more than two words together LOL... and Chris about a year ago, he liked it. But I really REALLY am not pushing to try to get it published which is why I don't know why I did what I did! And no one is admitting to having done something that they don't know why they did it.. be it good or bad.. just that they did something with no expectations .. ???

I can't think of an example right now, but I've done my share of inexplicable and impulsive things. And I'm so glad you sent a query about your trilogy! As for it not being publish worthy, if I remember correctly Chris very much disagreed :P

nymeth: chris did a spell check edit for me and then wrote a "review" of each book as he read them... like i said earlier, I love Chris..and he loves everything.. kinda like "give it to Mikie he'll eat anything!" LOL.. I don't doubt for a moment that he didn't enjoy them, but i have no ego that they are publish worthy at all lol.. but I still love them because they came from a hidden place inside of me so I have to love them lol..

I can't think of anything specific but know I'm quite an impulsive person, like you. What seems like a good idea one day can sometimes feel embarrassingly stupid the next, but it's too late because I've gone and done it. LOL. I don't think you've been stupid at all, Pat. Both these things seem well worth while to me. Nothing ventured, as they say. You go gurl!

I know I've been gone but I didn't think I'd have to return and give you a lesson in positive thinking.

If you weren't a "writer" I don't think you'd have as many regular visitors to your blog. You just keep writing and let others decide if its worthy to be published.

As for Obama, we all want to be a part of this historical time in our history, even if it means writing a letter that someone that speaks to him might read it.

It's something.

Hey you.

Not so big on doing impulsive things myself but I think what you did took a certain amount of courage and wasn't in the least bit stupid.

Let us know when you hear back.

hi Kiyotoe! left a message at your blog!

Melli: ya think? lol

cj: I don't expect any answers. it seems everyone thinks I did this for a reason and I didn't.. that's why i ask if anyone has ever done anything and they aren't sure why?

I don't think you were foolish - about either!!!

Sometimes stepping out of your comfort zone and taking a chance is the right thing to do. Just think - you might have never met DeForest if you hadn't wrote letters!

If I start doing something I wouldn't normally do, depending on what it is (one morning having just rolled out of bed, still feeling crappy, I scrubbed the entire house from top to bottom- including cleaning out the oven and behind the fridge) I usually just think my some family member, probably my Meme is influencing me or something. Silly I know, but it's the only explanation I can come up with!

Hey Pat, I wrote a letter to our Prime Minister and the leaders of each of our political parties back in December when the Prime MInister was going to ask the Gopvernor General to suspend parliament! I was so mad, so upset that our right to have parliament (and my tax dolllars at work for a parliament that isn't sitting??! no way!)was suspended because he wasn't ready to face the opposition - see, I still get mad at it! and the only party I heard from was the Prime Minister's office through our Member of Parliament who happens to be a head of major department, and it was a 'there there thank you for writing' little note. Grrr. So, I think, good for you, Pat, and really, maybe you do want to know deep down that your books can be published. Certainly we are all cheering for you - so we can read them too!!

karymn: not sure that was stepping out of my comfort zone ..wasn't nervous.. didn't even think about what I was doing! it's weird.

Tink: oh that was something i loved about living alone! lol if you wanted to get up in the middle of the night and clean the house you could! lol

Susan: wow, well i never wrote a president before.. i wish i had written to Kennedy when he pushed out space program into going to the moon! The thing is: I am not political at all. so I don't get into it OR write letters. I know it's good to do that especially when you are unhappy about how things are going, not sure why I don't, but it's not that I'm afraid to... guess i'll never know why i did these things.. i do feel stange about them though. had no inkling i'd do it, and have no feelings after doing so. (insert twilight zone music) lol
